Sweet 16 matchups to look out for:
Mac Demarco – Salad Days vs. Future Islands – Singles
These albums garnered 20 and 18 votes in the first round, respectively. Will Mac Demarco’s jangly, quirky guitar pop be able to hold up against Future Islands’ sleek, smooth, and sultry synthpop?
FKA Twigs – LP1 vs. Spoon – They Want My Soul
Consistent indie rock giants Spoon look to be strong contenders this year from their 24 vote total in the first round. They’re up against FKA Twigs, one of the biggest artists in the indie R&B scene, who comes into this round with a strong victory over Sun Kil Moon. This might end up becoming a battle of the genres.
Run the Jewels – Run The Jewels 2 vs. Real Estate – Atlas
Two of the top five scorers from the first round square off in the Sweet 16 and one of them will be going home. Will it be the chilled, folky rock group Real Estate that advances or will rap duo Run the Jewels’ heavily hyped RTJ2 skip by?
Alt-J – This Is All Yours vs. Flying Lotus – You’re Dead!
This round sees popular UK art rock and chamber pop group Alt-J’s sophomore release going up against world-renowned hip hop producer Flying Lotus’ jazziest and most cohesive release to date.
